The one in Northgate is called P&S and is still there I think. I have never been in it but am told it looked just like the other two. The one on Winton Road across from Hempstead is not the Taj Mahal. It has been closed as a Pavlovski restaurant for some years now,
I have traveled the country and have never found split pea soup as good as George's. And that includes Pea Soup Andersen's in California and on cruise ships. Plus their ham and bean soup was the best. They only served it on Mondays because they soaked the beans when they left Sunday afternoon.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08594168591282315824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812116909571848352.post-34239347322033982502017-05-22T16:24:07.157-04:002017-05-22T16:24:07.157-04:00Even though I grew up next door in Greenhills, I n...Even though I grew up next door in Greenhills, I never went here. Too bad. Went to the Friendly's a ton of times as a little kid with my folks. IIRC, there was never a Thriftway in that stop - are you thinking of the closed one at Rt 4 & Kemper that's now an auto zone or whatever. Down the way for forever there was a Marsh which became Lo Bill, then Marsh again, then split into 2 units, one which became a crummy dollar store.Digital Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11782507961551502030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812116909571848352.post-16122088904480578362017-05-21T11:49:11.275-04:002017-05-21T11:49:11.275-04:00Thanks, Jim! I wouldn't be surprised if you had met my parents at some point and if so, that's awesome. A lot of times, I find that these kinds of local establishments lend themselves to more of a community feeling and make people seem more approachable. Sometimes sharing a cup of coffee with a stranger at a counter like that can be the perfect thing.

I'll have to go look for the other restaurants. Were they also called "Forest Park Restaurant?"

Thanks for sharing not only your own memories of being there, but the tidbit about George as well. I wish I could've spent more time in this place, had a few more meals, maybe you and I would've crossed paths at the counter. I lived in NKY and then West Chester and finally Cincinnati, with the cdd hours, I never got up there as much as I would've liked. Maybe we'll catch a cup of coffee at another place sometime. I would always sit at the counter and talked to many regulars and non regulars but didn't always know peoples names. In 2003 my wife died and I discovered a place that could be a second home. I would often eat there once or even twice a day. Over the years I came to bring my new wife in, and sit at the counter. I brought my grandkids in so they could spin on the stools. I became a council member and then mayor of Forest Park, then I was not mayor and moved nearby. But I still liked to eat at "the restaurant" regularly. It will be missed.

The story of it is interesting. Three brothers came from Macedonia and started the Forest Park Restaurant, a very similar looking one on Winton Road in Brentwood, and a third one in Springdale Road near Northgate Mall. As far as I know that one is still open and in the family still.

George would tell the story that he came from the "old country" a couple of years after the restaurant opened to work with his brother. He arrived one day and started work the next, speaking no English. He pretty much worked there seven days a week, 8 to 8 and closing at 2 on Sundays. That was for about 50 years. Every few years the would close up and go visit the old country. So it was a rare day when they were not open. That is why it will be missed.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08594168591282315824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812116909571848352.post-69417734713055036402017-05-17T09:47:12.073-04:002017-05-17T09:47:12.073-04:00Great post, thanks for sharing!
