Really, really enjoyed getting some insight into Nick and the early days of the team. Interestingly enough, the NCAA still has some similar issues/quarrels with lower division pro/am teams such as the NPSL and USL2. A shame your team was disabnded!Ronny Salernohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09028420637930256541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7812116909571848352.post-72203941377903197122019-08-23T23:16:32.352-04:002019-08-23T23:16:32.352-04:00Nick Capurro was a visionary for youth soccer. In ...Nick Capurro was a visionary for youth soccer. In 1972-1973 he had an idea to put together a team of the best senior high school soccer players in Cincinnati and have them play against other American Soccer League equivalent teams before the Pro matches. I was lucky enough to make the team- I was Co-Captain and leading scorer for Cincinnati St. Xavier High School that year. It was great to play side-by-side great players who we competed against in high school matches, but also to actually practice with and scrimmage against the Pros - such as Charlie Roberts and his brother.
We never got to play any games against other city’s teams however, as the NCAA got word of the venture and threatened that we as players would be deemed ineligible for future NCAA play - their rationale was that fans were paying entry fees to watch!!! making us ineligible since they were paying to see us play!! L(they were paying to see the Comets- not us for gosh sake and now entry fees are charged fir high school games!!). Thus our team was disbanded. I was lucky I guess as this experience was invaluable and I learned many new skills - I was recruited to play ball for Johns Hopkins University and made Varsity as a freshman.
Nick therefore was indeed visionary - if you think about it, he essentially formed the first ‘Select Soccer’ squad in Cincinnati.
Thank you Nick. It was a great experience.

Dennis E. If I wrote about all of the teams: there's the 1909 squad, the Bruins, the Comets, the Kids, the Silverbacks, Kings, and Riverhawks, plus maybe a few I'm not remembering. Oh! The Cincinnati 1788 Express or something of the like that was up in the burbs, and the current indoor incarnation up there- the Cincinnati Swerve.

The Kids were mentioned in the earlier article about the Riverhawks/Galbreath Field which features a link to a youtube video about them here: http://queencitydiscovery.blogspot.com/2017/02/from-archives-part-3-galbreath-field.html

Kids came a few years after the Comets called it quits.
